Robles Berlanga, Rosario (1956–)
A prominent Mexican politician and party leader, Rosario Robles Berlanga was a native of the Federal District. She attended National Preparatory School No. 4, graduated from the National University of Mexico with an economics degree, and earned an MA in rural development from the Autonomous Metropolitan University. She entered politics as a member of the executive committee of the National Autonomous University Workers Union (1988–1993). A cofounder of the PRD (Democratic Revolutionary Party), she served in Congress from the Federal District from 1994 to 1997 and as secretary of organization of the PRD in 1996–1997. In 1997 Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas appointed her as secretary general of the Federal District, the first opposition party member to hold that post. When Cárdenas resigned as governor to run a third time for the presidency, she replaced him in 1999, serving out the remainder of his term, the first woman to hold that post. In 2002 she became president of the PRD but resigned in 2004 amid corruption scandals.
