República de Tule
República de Tule
República de Tule (1925), the name given by the Kuna people on the San Blas Islands off of Panama's Atlantic coast to their short-lived independence in 1925. Since colonial days the Kuna had always lived isolated from the rest of Panama, refusing to accept white rule. In February 1925, instigated by the former chargé d'affaires at the American legation in Panama, Richard O. March, they rose in rebellion against Panama and declared the region an independent republic. In the process many Panamanian police stationed in the area were killed. The government of Rodolfo Chiari quelled the rebellion, and a peace treaty was signed on 3 March 1925. March was declared persona non grata and expelled from the country.
