Platas Alvarez, Fernando Fabricio (1973–)

The Mexican diver Fernando Platas does not rank among the world's best in his sport, but his achievements have earned him national acclaim and international respect. Born in Mexico City on March 16, 1973, he has participated in the summer Olympic Games since 1992. In the three-meter springboard event he won a silver medal in 2000 and finished fifth in 2004; he was the standard bearer of the Mexican delegation in both of those years. He has won medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games and the world championships of the International Swimming Federation (FINA). Along with his younger teammate Rommel Pacheco, the charismatic Platas has shown that Mexicans can be competitive in sports not normally considered Mexican strengths.
