Padroado Real
Padroado Real
Padroado Real, royal patronage, the right granted by the Holy See to the Portuguese king to introduce clerics to ecclesiastical positions. Only provisional, the appointments were confirmed later by canonical authority. The ruler was allowed to collect the tithe, but, in return, was required to provide for the maintenance and growth of the church in his domain. Despite its medieval origins to foster the Christian reconquest of Muslim territory, the padroado did not come under the control of the Portuguese crown until the sixteenth century, when the king also became the Grand Master of the Order of Christ. In Brazil, it lasted from independence in 1822 until it was abolished in 1890.
