López Tarso, Ignacio (1925–)
Film, television, spoken word, and stage actor Ignacio López Tarso was born on January 15, 1925, in Mexico City. During World War II, he crossed the U.S. border and worked as a bracero (day laborer) in California. After suffering an injury that left him immobile for a year, he returned to Mexico and in 1949 began studying at Mexico City's School of Fine Arts. While an acting student, he was part of the Teatro Estudiantil Autónomo (Autonomous Student Theater) and performed in plays throughout the city. He made his professional theater debut in Nacida ayer (Born Yesterday) in 1951, and his film debut the following year in Hambre nuestra de cada día (1952). A highly respected actor, he has appeared in more than 100 theatrical works, 50 films, and 25 telenovelas. The San Francisco International Film Festival awarded him two Golden Gate acting awards, for his roles in Macario (1960) and El hombre de papel (The Paper Man, 1963). In 2007 he was awarded a special Golden Ariel by the Mexican Academy of Cinematic Arts and Sciences. He has also been involved in Mexican politics.
