Huerta, David (1949–)
The son of one of Mexico's most renowned poets, Efraín Huerta (1914–1982), poet David Huerta was born in Mexico City. He graduated from the College of Philosophy and Letters at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He has defined his own work as traditional, incorporating images, metaphors, similes, and unusual linguistic vocabulary. He has written essays and worked as a translator, and has served as the editorial secretary of the Fondo de Cultura Económica's Gaceta, as well as coordinator of the UNAM Casa del Lago literary workshops. Huerta has authored numerous books of poetry, beginning with his first published work El jardín de la luz (1972). Guillermo Sheridan, in his review of a later book, Cuaderno de noviembre (1978), describes Huerta's poems as extraordinary and complex, even difficult to read. Like his father, Huerta has been politically active. His poetry has received numerous awards, including the Carlos Pellicer Prize in 1990 and the prestigious Xavier Villaurrutia Prize in 2006.
