Castillo Ledón, Amalia (1902–1986)
Amalia Castillo Ledón (b. 18 August 1902; d. 3 June 1986), prominent early feminist in Mexico. A native of San Jerónimo, Tamaulipas, and daughter of a schoolteacher, Castillo Ledón completed graduate studies in the humanities at the National University. After her marriage to the prominent historian Luis Castillo Ledón, she established herself as an early feminist in United Nations and Mexican organizations. She served as president of the Inter-American Commission of Women in 1949, and in 1953 she addressed the Mexican Senate on women's suffrage, the first woman to do so. The first female Mexican diplomat, she was minister plenipotentiary to Sweden (1953), Finland (1956), and Switzerland (1959). She was the first woman to serve as undersecretary of education (1958–1964).
