Artigas
Artigas, department in northwestern Uruguay, 4,689 square miles in area with 69,200 inhabitants. Founded in 1852 on the bases of the settlement of San Eugenio, the city of Artigas has 35,120 inhabitants (1985). Located on the Quaraí River, it is the provincial capital. The region produces beef, hides, wool, and wheat, and entertains active trade exchanges with neighboring Brazil. The department is named after José Artigas (1764–1850), who fought in the independence movement and against the centralization efforts of Buenos Aires in the postindependence era.
