Apolinar (1928–)
Apolinar (Pablo Livi-nalli Santaella; b. 23 July 1928), Venezuelan artist. Although born in the small town of Guatire, Apolinar has spent his life in Petare, near Caracas. His preference for religious themes derives from years spent in a Catholic boarding school. He became an artist in 1965, when he produced his first painting, The Bolivarian Neighborhood. Since then his works have combined a primitive style with religious intimacy. In 1967 three of his paintings were included in the First Retrospective of Twentieth-Century Venezuelan Primitive Art, at the Musical Circle Gallery in Caracas. In the early 1970s he began a series of very imaginative books, the Biblioteca de Apolinar, which were first exhibited in 1972. The artistic and thematic complexity of these books gained him immediate recognition and inclusion in the 1977 Creadores al Margen show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas.
