views updated

Twinkie defence a legal defence of diminished responsibility in which irregular behaviour is attributed to an unbalanced diet of convenience food, from a proprietary name for a brand of cupcake with a creamy filling.

The Twinkie defence was first employed in 1979 in a San Francisco Supreme Court murder trial. It was disallowed as a legal defence by the US Congress in 1981.
