salutation, the the angel Gabriel's greeting to the Virgin Mary (cf. Luke 1:28–9), which forms the first part of the Ave Maria; it is also called the angelic salutation. In art, the virgin is often shown sitting reading; her posture in response to Gabriel may be startled or quiescent. A branch or pot of lilies, for purity, often appears.
