Cagliostro, Count

Cagliostro, Count assumed name of an Italian adventurer, Giuseppe Balsamo (1743–95), who posed successfully as an alchemist and magician in late 18th-century Paris society; he was banished after his involvement in the Affair of the Diamond Necklace. In 1789 he was arrested in Rome, and spent his final years in prison.
