L. -ārius -ARY + -AN, first appearing in late XVI in disciplinarian, quinquagenarian, later (XVII) becoming common in designations of religious bodies and their tenets, e.g. millenarian, predestinarian, sectarian, Trinitarian, Unitarian, on the analogy of which were formed humanitarian, parliamentarian, utilitarian.
