Super anxietatibus
Super anxietatibus, 1176. William the Lion, king of Scotland, captured at Alnwick in 1174, was obliged to make sweeping concessions to Henry II at the treaty of Falaise, including homage for his kingdom. He also promised that the Church of Scotland would be subject to the Church of England. The archbishop of York claimed authority over the bishops of Whithorn and Glasgow. But by the bull Super anxietatibus, Pope Alexander III forbade the archbishop to exercise that authority and, in effect, freed the Scottish church from English control. The terms were repeated by the bull Cum universi in 1192.
