Southwold or Sole Bay, battle of, 1672. Naval engagement off the Suffolk coast in the third Anglo-Dutch war on 7 June 1672 between de Ruyter with 91 ships and a slightly larger Anglo-French force, under the command of James, duke of York. Most of the fighting was between the Dutch and the English. De Ruyter lost more ships but the English fleet was badly damaged and Lord Sandwich, admiral of the Blue, drowned.
