Sigurd, jarl of Orkney

Sigurd, jarl of Orkney (d.1014). Sigurd succeeded his father Hlodve as jarl of Orkney, then under Norse rule, c.988 and extended his power over northern Scotland and the Isle of Man. In 995, under pressure from Olaf Tryggvason, king of Norway, he accepted baptism. In 1014, in alliance with Sihtric, king of Dublin, Sigurd campaigned against Brian Boru, high king of Ireland, but was killed at Clontarf. He was father of Thorfinn.
