Main plot
Main plot, 1603. Regarded by the government as the principal conspiracy to distinguish it from the Bye plot. The Spaniards were said to have encouraged a scheme to replace James I by his cousin Arabella Stuart in the hope of obtaining peace. Ralegh, already out of favour with the new monarch, was implicated on the dubious evidence of Lord Cobham. They both spent almost all their remaining days in the Tower.
