Jenkinson, Anthony
Jenkinson, Anthony (d. 1611). Jenkinson, a member of the Mercers' Company, made a series of remarkable voyages to Russia and the Near East in the reign of Ivan the Terrible. His first, via Norway (1557–60), took him to Moscow, where he met the tsar, and on to Bokhara. The second (1561–3) was to Persia to negotiate with the shah. A third (1566–7) and a last (1571–2) were to Moscow. He then settled down to trade at home. His voyages were related in Hakluyt's Principal Navigations, first published in 1589.
