Eltham palace

views updated

Eltham palace near Greenwich in Kent was acquired as a manor house by Edward II in 1311 and expanded by Edward III. It remained an important royal residence throughout the 15th cent., Edward IV adding a great hall. Tudor monarchs continued to make use of it but before the Civil War it had fallen into disrepair. The great hall was rescued in the 19th cent. after it had been used for decades as a barn.
