Van de Graaff generator
Van de Graaff generator Machine that generates high voltages by concentrating electrical charges on the outside of a hollow conductor. Positive or negative charges are sprayed onto a vertically moving belt that carries them up to a large hollow metal sphere where voltage builds up. An applied voltage of c.50,000 volts can generate up to 10 million volts. The generator was invented by the US physicist Robert J. Van de Graaf.
