Stewart, James Maitland (1908–97) US film actor. Stewart's roles in the Frank Capra comedies You Can't Take It With You (1938) and Mr Smith Goes to Washington (1939) gained plaudits and awards. Further praise followed for his performance in It's a Wonderful World (1939). Stewart won a best actor Academy Award for the classic The Philadelphia Story (1940). He starred in three Hitchcock films: Rope (1948), Rear Window (1954), and Vertigo (1958). Other films include Anatomy of A Murder (1959), The Man who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), Shenandoah (1965), and The Shootist (1976).
