Shearer, Alan (1970– ) English footballer. Shearer began his professional career with Southampton in 1988. A powerful striker, he joined Blackburn Rovers in 1992. In 1996, he was the leading scorer in the European Championship and moved to Newcastle United for a world-record transfer fee of £15 million. In 1998, he captained England's World Cup team. In 2002, Shearer became the first player to score 100 goals in the Premier League.
