secondary school Schools providing education for pupils after primary school. The ages at which pupils transfer from primary to secondary schools in the UK vary in different education authorities. It is usually at age 11. In some areas, with middle schools, transfer is at 12, and in independent schools it is usually at 13. Some secondary schools cater for the 11–16 age range, others for 11–18.
