Scilly, Isles of
Scilly, Isles of Archipelago of more than 140 isles and islets in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Cornwall, sw England, 45km (28mi) sw of Land's End; the capital is Hugh Town (St Mary's). The terrain is mostly rocky, and many shipwrecks lie off the coasts. The combination of mild climate and heavy rainfall ensure a good environment for growing flowers and spring vegetables. Tourism is an increasingly important industry. Only five of the islands are inhabited: St Mary's (the largest), Tresco, St Martin's, St Agnes, and Bryher. Total pop. (1997) 2100.
