Russian Revolution of 1905 Series of violent strikes and protests against Tsarist rule in Russia. It was provoked mainly by defeat in the Russo-Japanese War (1904–05). It began on Bloody Sunday (January 22), when a peaceful demonstration in St Petersburg was fired on by troops. Strikes and peasant risings spread, culminating in a general strike in October, which forced the Tsar to institute a democratically elected Duma (parliament). By the time it met in 1906, the government had regained control. Severe repression followed.
