Gide, André Paul Guillaume (1869–1951) French novelist, playwright, and critic. His novels and Journals (1885–1950) show the constant struggle between his puritan and pagan elements. Mature works, such as Les Faux-monnayeurs (1926), dramatize a search for spiritual truth. He received the 1947 Nobel Prize in literature.
