Fitzgerald, Penelope Mary (1916–2000) British novelist and biographer. Her first novel, The Golden Child, did not appear until 1977. Offshore (1979), a portrait of a houseboat community, won the Booker Prize. Her later works, including At Freddie's (1982), Innocence (1986) and The Gate of Angels (1990), show a similarly deft handling of character and detail.
