ethanoic acid (acetic acid) Colourless, corrosive liquid (CH3COOH) made by the oxidation of ethanol, either by catalysis or by the action of bacteria. It is the active ingredient in vinegar, and has many uses in the organic chemicals industry. Properties: r.d. 1.049; m.p. 16.6°C (61.9°F); b.p. 117.9°C (244.4°F).
