Education, UK Department of (DES) British government department responsible for the promotion of education and the fostering of civil science in England. Headed by the secretary of state for education, its specific function is the broad allocation of capital resources for education, provision and training of teachers, and the setting of basic educational standards. The department works in cooperation with local education authorities (LEAs), which administer the day-to-day running of schools, and with the University Grants Committee which administers the universities.
