Dundee. Situated on the Firth of Tay, east Scotland, and already a thriving centre with trading connections throughout northern Europe when granted burghal status c.1191, Dundee prospered through textiles, guns, and its role as an entrepôt port until the mid-17th cent., despite intermittent assaults by the English. Recovery after Monck's sack was slow until it became the base for one of Scotland's largest whaling fleets and expanded its textile activities to become ‘Juteopolis’. Past renown for shipbuilding, ‘jute, jam, and journalism’ has yielded to economic and social insecurity, from which it continues to endeavour to emerge.
