Alcock, Sir John William (1892–1919) Pioneer British airman who, together with Arthur Whitten-Brown, was the first to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. Their transatlantic flight began in St John's, Newfoundland on June 14, 1919, and landed 16.5 hours later near Clifden, Ireland.
