Acosta, Gabriel
Acosta, Gabriel ( Uriel d') (1591–1647) Portuguese theologian. A Roman Catholic convert to Judaism, he fled to Amsterdam. When excommunicated by the synagogue in Amsterdam for atheism, he recanted. In his Autobiography (1687), Acosta announced his preference for the ‘law of nature’, or deism, over either Judaism or Christianity.
