Born October 1, 1930, in Lille, France; died of cancer, November 23, 2006, in Paris, France. Actor. French actor Noiret, who appeared in more than 125 films, was best known to international audiences for his roles in the Italian films Cinema Paradiso and Il postino, in which he played the role of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. Noiret made his film debut in an uncredited part in Gigi in 1948. His career was boosted following his appearance in Zazie dans le metro in 1960. Notable film credits include Alexandre le bienheureux in 1968, La grande bouffe in 1973, L'horloger de Saint-Paul in 1974, and La vie et rien d'autre, released in 1989. Noiret was nominated for and won numerous awards over the course of his career; his first award was for best actor in the film Therese Desqueryoux at the Venice Film Festival in 1963. Noiret won two Cesar Awards for best actor: in 1976 for Le vieux fusil and again in 1990 for La vie et rien d'autre. Noiret also worked in television and on the stage. In the 1950s he was a member of Theatre National Populaire and appeared in such plays as Marie Tudor, Le Cid, and Don Juan.
