Description:

Independent, 4-year, men only. Awards bachelor's degrees. Founded 1867. Setting: 61-acre urban campus. Endowment: $95.4 million. Research spending 2003-04: $3 million. Educational spending 2003-04: $7347 per student. Total enrollment: 2,891. Student-undergrad faculty ratio is 15:1. 2,277 applied, 67% were admitted. 20% from top 10% of their high school class, 47% from top quarter, 77% from top half. Full-time: 2,729 students. Part-time: 162 students. Students come from 49 states and territories, 15 other countries, 70% from out-of-state, 0.1% Native American, 0.2% Hispanic, 94% black, 0% Asian American or Pacific Islander, 3% international, 4% 25 or older, 40% live on campus, 2% transferred in. Application deadlines: 2/15, 10/15 for early decision. Notification: continuous until 4/1, 12/15 for early decision.

Costs Per Year:

Application fee: $45. Comprehensive fee: $24,488 includes full-time tuition ($14,318), mandatory fees ($1422), and college room and board ($8748). College room only: $4982. Room and board charges vary according to board plan. Part-time tuition: $597 per semester hour.

Collegiate Environment:

Orientation program. Drama-theater group, choral group, marching band, student-run newspaper. Social organizations: 34 open to all; national fraternities; 7% of eligible undergrads are members.
