Wilford, Michael
Wilford, Michael (1938– ). English architect. He assisted Stirling & Gowan (1960–3) before working with Stirling only, becoming a partner in James Stirling Michael Wilford & Associates (1971–92), and since 1993 has been senior partner in Michael Wilford & Partners. He worked with Stirling & Gowan on the University of Leicester Engineering Building (1959–63), and with Stirling on many projects, including the Staatsgalerie (State Gallery), Stuttgart, Germany (1977–84), No. 1 Poultry, City of London (from 1986), and the Lowry Centre, Salford, Manchester (from 1991). Since Stirling's death his practice has developed, especially in Germany, and his work has attracted considerable critical attention. In 1997 the Stuttgart Music-School (1987–95) won the Stirling Prize, the year in which the Gateway Building, Stühlingen, was completed.
