Watanabe, Youiji

Watanabe, Youiji (1923–83). Japanese architect. He caricatured certain tendencies in architecture by, for example, designing a paediatrician's house in the shape of a dragon, and an apartment-block in the guise of a penguin. Among his works may be cited Dragon Fort, Ito (1968), Sky Buildings (various dates), and the Tanaka House, Naoetsu (1975). To some critics his work was ‘heretical’ because it punctured the absurd pretensions of aspects of Modernism.
