Shute, John
Shute, John (d. 1563). Author of the first treatise on architecture in English, The First and Chief Groundes of Architecture (1563), based on his travels in Italy in the 1550s, and drawing heavily on Serlio and Vitruvius. Primarily dealing with the Orders, its illustrations (probably by Shute himself ) are important for their clarity and originality, and the book went into further editions (1579, 1584, 1587). It is difficult to assess its influence, but it was probably a source for many details.
