Pompe, Antoine (1873–1980). Undersung Belgian architect. His Orthopaedic Clinic for Dr Van Neck, Brussels (1910), is a remarkable composition, with ventilation-shafts expressed externally. His low-cost housing projects (e.g. at Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe, Brussels (1922–6) ) were sensitively designed and humane, and his private houses (e.g. in Floridalaan, Uccele, Brussels (1926–destroyed) ) were always interesting. Opposed to the reductivist tendencies of Functionalism and International Modernism, he wrote a devastating polemic describing a man who had been disastrously redesigned by a Modernist architect.
