pilgrimage-church

pilgrimage-church. Although many great churches were places of pilgrimage (e.g. the Cathedrals of Canterbury and Lincoln) because of the Relics contained therein (St Thomas of Canterbury and St Hugh respectively), the term is especially given to those churches on pilgrimage-routes, e.g. on the way to Santiago de Compostela. Examples include St-Foy, Conques, St-Sernin, Toulouse, and St-Martin, Tours. Later examples include the exquisite C18 Wallfahrtskirche (pilgrimagechurch) Vierzehnheiligen (the Fourteen Saints), Franconia, Germany, by Neumann and others, and the church of Padre Pio, Flaminio, near Rome (1991–2003—by Piano).
