Lewyn, John

Lewyn, John (fl. 1364–c.1398). English master-on. He was principal mason at Durham Cathedral in the latter part of C14, and carried out many works in the North, including the great kitchen at Durham (completed 1374), repairs to Bamburgh Castle (1368–72), the new keep at Durham Castle, works at Carlisle and Roxburgh Castles (from 1378), various structures at Bolton Castle, Yorks., and major alterations to Dunstanburgh Castle (1380–7). He was unquestionably the most important provincial architect working in the North of England at the time.
