Irwin, Robert
Irwin, Robert (1928– ). American artist. He created several installations in the 1960s into which viewers could walk, and this prompted several outdoor works, e.g. the Public Safety Plaza, Seattle, WA, called 9 Spaces, 9 Trees (1980–3), in which an uninteresting public space was enhanced through contrast and complement. He also designed Filigreed Line, Wellesley College, MA (1979), Wave Hill Green, Bronx, NYC (1986–7), and Sentinel Plaza, Pasadena, CA (1989–90). His Being and Circumstance: Notes Towards a Conditional Art was published in 1985.
