international units (iu) Used as a measure of comparative potency of natural substances, such as vitamins, before they were obtained in a sufficiently pure form to measure by weight. Still sometimes used (3.33 iu vitamin A = 1 μg; 40 iu vitamin D = 1 μg; 1 iu vitamin E = 1 mg).
