Heideloff, Karl Alexander von
Heideloff, Karl Alexander von (1789–1865). German architect. He was Professor at the Polytechnische Schule (Polytechnic School) in Nuremberg from 1823, and wrote several important studies, including Bauhütte des Mittelalters in Deutschland (Masonic Lodges of the Middle Ages in Germany—1844) and Kunst des Mittelalters in Schwaben (Art of the Middle Ages in Swabia—1855). He carried out numerous restorations of medieval buildings, including Bamberg Cathedral (1831–4), and St Jakob, Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber (1854–7). Among his designs for new churches, based on late-Gothic and geometrical principles owing much to Neo-Classicism, St Peter's, Sonneberg, in the former Dukedom of Saxe-Meiningen (1843–4), is probably the best surviving example.
