Hartley, Jesse
Hartley, Jesse (1780–1860). English Surveyor to the Liverpool Dock Trustees (1824–60), in which capacity he designed (with contributions from P. C. Hardwick) the Albert Dock (1843–5), a powerful exercise in utilitarian brick carried on massive unfluted cast-iron Doric columns. It is as Sublime an ensemble as anywhere in Europe. He also designed the Brunswick (1832), Waterloo (1834), Stanley (1850–7), Wapping (1855), and West Canada (1858) Docks, all in Liverpool.
