hammer-beam. Transverse timber in the position of a tie-beam, but short, not spanning the space, essentially a bracket supported on a wall and brace and carrying the hammer-post. A false hammer-beam is like a true hammer-beam, but does not have the hammer-post above: rather it is braced below and supports the base of the principal or collar. See also truss.
