Campionesi
Campionesi. C19 term for a group of sculptors and architects active in Lombardy from the mid-C12 to the late C14: the name derives from Campione da Lugano, their place of origin. The Rood-screen (late-C12) in Modena Cathedral is attributed to Anselmo di Campione; the altar, crypt capitals, main façade (including the circular window), and the Porta Regia on the south flank of the nave (1209–31— which has a porch incorporating one hexagonal and one twisted column) to his followers, including his son, Ottavio; and the completion of the Ghirlandina campanile (1319) and nave pulpit to Enrico. Giovanni da Campione designed the Baptistery at Santa Maria Maggiore, Bergamo (1340), and the south porch of the church (1351). Bonino da Campione (fl. 1357–97) signed the extraordinary tomb of Cansignorio della Scala (d. 1375) at Santa Maria Antica, Verona, and Matteo da Campione (d. 1396) carried out major works at Monza and Milan Cathedrals.
