Barnet, James J. (1827–1904). Scots-born Australian architect. He was Colonial Architect for New South Wales (1862–90), and produced numerous competent buildings, including the Venice-inspired General Post Office, Sydney (1865–74); the Lands Department, Sydney (1876–90), a palazzo-like Renaissance Revival building; the Court House and Government Buildings, Bathurst (1878–80), a charming symmetrical composition featuring verandahs; and the arcaded Court House, Goulburn (1887). He also designed the Gothic railway-station associated with Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney (1868), for funerals by train.
