Arbeitsrat für Kunst

Arbeitsrat für Kunst. Group of German architects founded (1918) by Bruno Taut, which included Otto Bartning, Walter Gropius, Erich Mendelsohn, and Max Taut, with several artists. Taut wanted the group to wield political influence similar to the Soldiers' and Workers' Councils, but this failed, and Gropius took over the leadership in 1919. When the latter took up his post at the Bauhaus in Weimar, the programme there reflected the ideals of the Arbeitsrat (Work Council for Art), which called for the fusion of the arts under the wing of architecture, the symbolic Bauprojekt. The group exhibited and published widely, but disbanded in 1921 through lack of funds.
