rugose Applied to a shell that has a rough or wrinkled texture. The term is commonly used to describe the appearance of the epitheca of some corals (e.g. Rugosa), but is also applied to any shell texture where the surface is raised in a wrinkled manner to produce ridges. The word is derived from the Latin ruga, meaning wrinkle.
