Thomas J. Watson Jr. (19141993) took the helm of IBM shortly before his father's death. Leading IBM from 1956 until 1971, he is credited for bringing IBM from the tabulator era into the Computer Age. After his retirement, he spent several years as U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union.
